On March 26, 2008, the Phoenix medical community lost one of its beloved leaders. Dr. Nutley passed away at his home after a nearly one year courageous and graceful battle with cancer. He spent his life working tirelessly to heal and comfort patients with head and neck disorders. He asked about, and spoke of, many of his patients until his last days. Remembered as a true renaissance man in the Phoenix valley, he was a natural leader, skilled surgeon, compassionate physician, gifted athlete, loving husband, proud father and jubilant grandfather. Because of his unwavering integrity, resolute dedication to his trade, and tender heart he was cherished by his peers. He has touched many of us in forever lasting ways with his hands and his words of wisdom. He was truly a unique man.

Peter H. Nutley, MD, FACS: Biography 
Dr. Nutley was an Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeon who practiced in the valley for 33 years. His practice thrived with the help of Cheryl and Stephanie, whom he held dear. During his career he was named to the Phoenix Magazine “Top Docs” list 11 times.

Prior to starting Arizona Head, Neck and Facial Surgery, Ltd., Dr. Nutley attended the University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago, graduating in 1967. During medical school, Dr. Nutley met his wife Nancy who was a head and neck surgical nurse. During his senior year of medical school, Dr. Nutley was accepted into the prestigious Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery training program at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. He served as a surgical intern and resident at Chicago’s Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital and then excelled at the Eye and Ear Infirmary during his Otolaryngology training. Prior to his senior year of residency he was elected to be the Administrative Chief Resident by the faculty. In addition to leading the house staff, during his chief resident year, Dr. Nutley founded the University of Illinois Department of Otolaryngology Veterans Administration hospital rotation. Today, over 35 years later, this rotation remains an invaluable service to Veterans with head and neck cancer and an unmatched training experience for young Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgeons. Following graduation from residency in 1972, Dr. Nutley served as Chief of the Department of Otolaryngology at Womak Army Hospital, Fort Bragg, North Carolina from 1972-1974. In 1974, he and his family moved to Phoenix where they have truly enjoyed being a part of the Valley community.

During his career here in Phoenix, Dr. Nutley has been named to the Phoenix Magazine “Top Docs” 11 of the last 12 years. In addition, he as been listed in “The Best Doctors in America” Naifeh and Smith 1997-2002 and “The Best Doctors in America, Pacific Region” 1996-1997. He was also honored by “Guide to Top Doctors USA” in 1999 and 2002-2005.

In addition to being a skilled surgeon and compassionate physician, Dr. Nutley was also a natural leader. He was elected Chief of Staff for Banner Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center from 1997-1999, Vice Chief of Staff from 1990-1993, Chief of Otolaryngology from 1980-1997 and member of the Executive Committee from 1984-2000. He has also served as St. Joseph’s Hospital’s Chief of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery from 1990-1992 and Phoenix Regional Medical Center’s (Humana) Chief of Surgery for 1978-1980, 1982-1984 and Chief of Staff from 1980-1982.

Dr. Nutley was certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. He was also a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Arizona Society of Otolaryngology, Maricopa County Medical Society and the Arizona Medical Association.

In 2005, Dr. Nutley returned to the University of Illinois College of Medicine and the Eye and Ear Infirmary to recruit a new partner. There he met Dr. Rehl who enthusiastically joined the practice in July of 2007. Dr. Rehl has the privilege of continuing the tradition of compassionate and superior quality ear, nose and throat care for patients here in the Phoenix valley.

Dr. Nutley is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy; his two daughters Jennifer Nutley MacLennan and Cynthia Nutley; his son-in-law Grant; and his grandchildren, Logan, Meredith, Marissa and Natasha. He is also survived by his beloved family in Chicago, Illinois, including his father, Peter H. Nutley Sr., and his sisters and brothers, Candy, Denny, Charles and Rosie, Mary and Debbie; his in-laws, Edward and Jean, Donna and Rex, and Janet and Joe; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Nutley.
